Measurement While Drilling (MWD) & Gamma Services

LEAM Drilling Systems, Inc. provides state of the art MWD services for the directional drilling services industry. LEAM MWD Systems provide wellbore surveys, mud motor toolface orientation and natural gamma ray lithology measurements.

Wellbore Surveys
Surveys are provided by using an accelerometer/magnetometer sensor package to measure the earth's magnetic and gravitational fields. The resulting magnetic and gravitational measurements are used to calculate azimuth (or direction) and inclination that define the trajectory of the wellbore. The drilling angles can then be used to calculate the physical displacement from the rig surface location defining the position of the wellbore below the earth's surface. The resulting surveys allow the operator and directional drilling company to monitor their planned versus actual wellbore path with real-time data and drill the well to the desired target.

Toolface Orientation
Directional drilling involves the use of a positive displacement mud motor with a bent outer housing to deflect a bit along a pre-determined path. The toolface orientation defines the direction in which the bent housing is pointed. The directional driller uses the real-time toolface orientation to drill the well in the proper direction (or azimuth) and build the wellbore angle to the proper inclination.

Natural Gamma Ray Lithology
The rocks (or lithology) below the earth's surface contain naturally occurring radioactive elements. The natural gamma ray sensor measures the amount of naturally occurring radioactivity within the earth's formation. The amount of radioactivity can be related to the lithology and guide the exploration company into their desired reservoir target. Gamma ray measurements are transmitted to the surface in the same manner as directional survey and toolface data. The decoded gamma ray data is plotted versus depth providing the geologist a log of the wellbore being drilled. The geologist can correlate the real-time gamma ray with offset log data and/or seismic data and is able to make changes to the planned wellbore path to hit the desired geological target.

Real-time Data Transmission
All data acquired by the MWD sensor packages is transmitted up hole using positive pressure pulse sound waves that travel from the bottom of the well being drilled to the surface through the fluid column. The transmitted data is decoded on the surface and the digital data is made available to the directional drillers and geologists for real-time interpretation and decision making during the drilling process.

LEAM MWD Product Lines
Depending on the drilling environments, LEAM MWD systems can be customized to meet your project requirements. LEAM MWD offers two product lines configured to optimize performance during the process of drilling the well.
Positive Pulse Retrievable MWD
This system can be utilized to reduce lost in hole risk. In the event the BHA becomes stuck during the drilling process, the retrievable MWD system can be wireline retrieved, saving the customer the cost of replacing the MWD system.

Positive Pulse Collar Mounted MWD
This system can be utilized where lost circulation is expected and lost circulation material will be added to the drilling fluid. The LEAM collar mounted MWD system can handle up to 50 pounds per barrel of both fibrous and granular LCM materials.
